Calcined magnesia is calcined magnesia obtained from magnesite ore by high-temperature calcination.

Magnesium oxide fired with coke as fuel at 1400-1800°C is called heavy-burned magnesium,

also known as dead-burned magnesium; magnesium oxide fired with coal or gas as fuel at 700-1000°C

is light-burned magnesium, also known as caustic magnesium.

1. Physical and chemical properties of dead-burned magnesium

Dead-burned magnesium, chemical formula MgO, relative molecular mass 40.30. The melting point is 2800°C.

Odorless, tasteless, non-toxic, insoluble in pure water and organic solvents, slightly soluble in acids, stable in air.

2. Physical and chemical properties of lightly burned magnesium powder

Lightly burned magnesium powder, chemical formula MgO, relative molecular weight 40.30. The melting point is 2800°C.

Odorless, tasteless, non-toxic, insoluble in pure water and organic solvents, the solubility in water increases due to the presence of CO2,

and can be dissolved in acid or ammonium salt solution. It is easy to deliquesce, and can gradually absorb CO2 and water in the air to f

orm magnesium carbonate double salt. The properties of light-burned magnesia and sintered magnesia are shown in Table 1.

3. Application of dead burnt magnesia

Dead burnt magnesia is mainly used as refractory material for steelmaking furnace lining.

It is also used to make calcium-magnesia bricks, magnesia-carbon bricks, magnesia-alumina bricks, magnesia-chrome bricks,

forsterite bricks, magnesia-silicate bricks and other refractory products.

Dead-burned magnesium powder is also used as insulating filler for electric heating and electrical components.

4. Application of lightly burned magnesium powder

Lightly burned magnesium powder is widely used. In the chemical industry, i

t is used as a raw material for the production of magnesium sulfate, magnesium nitrate, magnesium hydroxide,

and magnesium chloride. The building materials industry is used to make raw materials such as magnesia movable houses,

substitute wood packaging boxes, magnesia floor tiles, magnesia corrugated tiles, magnesia decorative panels,

and magnesia doors and windows. In agriculture, it is used as a raw material for the production of magnesium fertilizer to adjust the pH

value of the soil; as a feed additive for cattle, horses, sheep and other livestock. In the field of environmental protection, it can be used for

flue gas desulfurization, neutralizing agent for waste acid water and adsorbent for heavy metal ions. The steel industry makes magnesia

pellets for blast furnace linings.
